Songfacts:

Jutta Hipp (born February 4, 1925 in Leipzig, + April 7 in New York) can be described as a German jazz icon. Already during the 2nd World War she came to jazz in the illegal jazz club Hot Club Leipzig. At first she studied graphic art. In 1946 she moved to West Germany. 1953-1955 she led the Jutta Hipp Quintet in Frankfurt, which initially included Emil Mangelsdorff, Joki Freund, Hans Kresse (bass) and Karl Sanner. In 1953 she took first place among the German jazz pianists in the Podium-Jazz-Referendum, ahead of Paul Kuhn. In 1954 she moved to the USA and initially played with well-known jazz musicians such as Ed Thigpen and Charles Mingus. She was the first European musician (and even the second white musician at all) to receive a contract with Blue Notes. But after that, her career stalled for various reasons. She worked temporarily as a seamstress and later returned to design and drawing. She remained connected to jazz and took photos in jazz clubs. Horacio comes from the album At The Hickory House Volume 1 & 2 on Blue Notes from 1955.
