The Golden Gate Quartet was founded in 1934 in Norfolk, Virginia. It stille exists (of course with new members). First some of their concerts were played by local radio stations. 1937 they got a contract with Bluebird Records. They were invited by John Hammond to the Carnegie Hall in New York. This was the beginning of their national career. Sometimes they were invited in the White House (e.g. to the inauguratiion of Franklin Roosevelt). After world war 2 they grew very popular in Europe. For some years they lived in Paris. Elvis Presley got to know an estimate them. Together they recorded some songs.

The spritual "Joshua Fit The Battle Of Jerocho" refers to bible: Joshua 6. The jazzinotes transcription refers to the album version, which is quite similar of the live version in the YouTube video. The lyric version of The Golden Gate Quartet:

Joshua fit de battle of Jericho, Je-ri-cho, Je-ri-cho..
Joshua fit de battle of Jericho and the walls came tumblin' down.

Verse 1

Good morning sister Mary.
Good morning brother John.
I wanna stop and talk with you
just to tell you how I come along.
I know you've heard of Joshua.
He was the son of Nun.
He never stopped his working with God
until his work was done.

Verse 2

You may talk about the man of Gideon
You may talk about the man of Saul
There's none like the good old Joshua
At the battle of Jericho

They tell me, great God that Joshua’s spear
Was well nigh five feet long
And upon his hip was the double-edged sword
And his mouth was a gospel horn

Yet bold and brave he stood
Salvation on his way
Go blow them ram horns Joshua cried
For the battle am in my hand

Verse 3

Up to the walls of Jericho
He marched with a spear in his hand
"Go blow dem ram's horns“ Jo-shua cried
"For the battle am in my hand"

Then the ram-lamb-sheep's horns began to blow
Trumpets began to sound
Old Joshua shouted „Glo-ry“
And the walls come tumblin' down
