My Baby Just Cares For Me, like Makin’ Whoopee (also available from jazzinotes) comes from the 1928 musical Whoopee!, which two years later became a film. This song later became the trademark of pianist and singer Nina Simone (1933 - 2003), who recorded her debut album Little Girl Blue in 1958. However, it was not until 1987 that Nina Simone’s interpretation of this song became world famous through a perfume commercial for Chanel No 5. In the same year the song reached the top of most European charts.
Aside from Nina Simone, the song has been covered by many different artists: George Michael, Nat King Cole, Amanda Lear, Frank Sinatra, etc. Today it is also considered a swing standard and is often played as a dance version in association with the Swing Dance Revival. The original version features piano played together with double bass, which we have arranged for solo piano while keeping close to the original sound. The famous piano solo is included, too: note-for-note.
Nina Simone became one of the leading musical figures in the American Civil Rights Movement.
