Songfacts:
Clandestino was composed by José Manuel Chao and released in 1998 as the title track on Manu Chao's album of the same name. Isaac & Nora's interpretation adds its own touches. It is performed more simply, with a slightly straighter rhythm and only single-voice singing in the verses. The vocal range is lower and therefore more relaxed. Like the original, the arrangement uses only three chords. Literally translated, "clandestino" means secretive. It refers to a person without papers. The song describes such a life between Ceuta (the Spanish enclave in North Africa) and Gibraltar. Isaac & Nora's YouTube video hasn't garnered quite as many views as the original, but still over 1.5 million to date. The original is also available from jazzinotes, in two versions: for male vocals (original key) and for female vocals (a major third lower).
Isaac & Nora is a French duo of two teenagers, actually a trio: their father, Nicolas, usually joins them on guitar in the background. With their refreshing, carefree, and increasingly sophisticated arrangements, they have garnered a large online following. Isaac was born in 2009, Nora in 2012. The video Clandestino dates from 2024.
