In contrast to the large number of illegal and free circulating downloads of the much sought-after sheet music of Tones, the jazzinotes edition is really in accordance with the original recording of this tune. What makes this piece of music so well-loved and why do so many people like to play it on the piano? One possible answer might be that - although the tune seems easy and natural - its rhythm and metres are complex and highly sophisticated because of the rather unusual metres of 11/8 and 5/8 alternating with each other. Maybe these "irregularities" make the tune appear "natural", for easy and consequent symmetry is hardly ever found in nature. In spite of this complexity the tune is not difficult to play, because the notes recur like a mantra, and therefore seem to have a magic spell. Nova Nova is a French duo (Michel Gravil und Marc Durif, the composer of Tones) that is well known since the nineties for their electronic music. They are not only commercially successful but also received excellent reviews in leading music magazines in France as well as abroad (e.g. Melody Maker, Mixmag, N.M.E.). Their numerous cooperations with well known musicians like Laurent Garnier, Stephan Eicher, Alan Stivell, Philippe Pascale, Aqua Bassino, Malcolm McLaren or Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order) and many more introduced the duo to an even larger audience. Tones is part of the sampler Café Del Mar Ibiza Vol. 3 (together with other artists e.g. Pat Metheny, Afterlife, José Padilla), another reason for the ongoing success of the tune.
