Songfacts:

Here and here you find the the original recording of the jazzinotes edition with the wrong hint that it is Maria Callas who is singing. In fact Lesley Garret is the singer. This recording corresponds to the album »Leslie Garrett: The Soprano's Greatest Hits". The piano & vocal of jazzinotes' score corresponds exactly to the original composition of Bach/Gounod. In addition you find the chord symbols (which of course are not part of the original composition) corresponding to modern music theory.

In addition to piano & vocal you find the instruments of the original recording: clarinet and strings (viola, violoncello and double bass). But these instruments may be omitted.

Ave Maria is one of the most known classical tunes. It is based on the first fuga of the Well-Tempered Clavier of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750). Charles Gounod (1818 - 1893) took the piano part almost unvaried in his composition of 1852 and added the vocal melody. He called his composition »Méditation sur le premier prélude de Bach«. 1859 he underlayed the melody with the lyrics of the Latin prayer "Ave Maria".

Lesley Garrett (*10th of april 1955) was from 1984 soprano singer at the English National Opera. 2001 she got the Order of the British Empire.
