Songfacts:

The sheet music consist of a score with the four male voices and the piano accompaniment including chord symbols. (Guitar, bass and drums of the original recording are not notated.) There is also a choral score with which the piece can be performed a cappella. Of course, instead of a choir, a quartet can interpret the notes as in the original. The piano accompaniment can be changed freely. The chord symbols can also be used to play an accompaniment with other instruments (e.g. guitar).

The Golden Gate Quartet was founded in 1934 in Norfolk, Virginia. It stille exists (of course with new members). First some of their concerts were played by local radio stations. 1937 they got a contract with Bluebird Records. They were invited by John Hammond to the Carnegie Hall in New York. This was the beginning of their national career. Sometimes they were invited in the White House (e.g. to the inauguratiion of Franklin Roosevelt). After world war 2 they grew very popular in Europe. For some years they lived in Paris. Elvis Presley got to know an estimate them. Together they recorded some songs.

The original recording of the spiritual "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen" is a YouTube video of a live recording from 1994. You can clearly see / hear how moved the musicians are and how they seem to have a very close relationship with this spiritual.
