Songfacts:

Edith Piaf (19th december 1915 in Paris - 10th october 1963 in Plascassier) is the daughter of a singer and an artist (contortionist), from whom she inherited the civil name Gassion. Her youth was very difficult: Right after her birth she was given to her maternal grandmother, where she almost starved. Later on her father gave her to his mother, owner of a brothel. The father formed her to a street singer. He was alcoholic and often basted her. Formative for Edith was her blindness and her healing on a pilgrimage to Lisieux to Holy Therese, whom she worshipped her whole life long.

At the age of 15 she left her father and made her way as a street singer on her own. The young singer (only 1,47m tall) was engaged from an owner of a cabaret. He gave her the name "la môme piaf", which may be translated as little cheeky gal.

At the age of 17 she gave birth to a child who grew up at his father, but died at the age of two.

1935 her first album was recorded: La Java en Mineur. Shortly after her mentor, the owner of the cabaret, was murdered. She was suspected to know about. Although she was ransomed, she escaped on the countyside and returned to Paris more than two years later. Under the influence of her new mentor, Raymond Asso, she left her former setting. After that their international career began...
