Songfacts:

Abdullah Ibrahim war born on the 9th of october 34 in Cape Town as Adolph Johannes Brand. He emigrated in times of apartheid to Europe and was supported by Duke Ellington. In the Jazz world he became famous as Dollar Brand. In 1965 he moved on the the USA. As a pianist he was member of several bands and also organized his own band. After converting to islam he returned to South Africa in 1970. 1979 he recorded the album African Marketplace with the title tune. He recorded several interpretations of this composition, e.g. on Cape Town Flowers, Mindif, Ekapaa Lodumo oder A Celebration. There a a lot of cover versions, too.
