Songfacts:

Jelly Roll Morton (1890 - 1941) was born in New Orleans. His year of birth however is not known: There is no birth certificate. May be he was even born in 1884. He probably was the first great piano composer and interpreter of jazz. His careet began as a teenager when he played bar piano in brothels of Storyville. But even before he was known as a great musician, but mainly as guitar and harmonica player. His nickname »Jelly Roll« is according Wikipedia a sexual connotation and may correspond to his many affairs. Besides in the Dixieland he temporarely lived in California and Chicago. 1936 he foundet the legendary "Red Hot Peppers". Because of the technical limits of the 78 records many of his famous compositions don't last more than tree minutes or are even shorter. In times of swing his music was no more popular. That's why Jelly Roll Morton came into severe troubles. He did not live to see the later Dixieland boom

Deep Creek originally was composed for combo. Butch Thompson arranged it for piano solo. The original recording of the jazzinotes edition is the album version on "88s New Orleans Joys". In addition you find a simplified version without tenth in the left hand and a simplified solo. The level of the original is between 3 and 4, the one of the simplified version between 2 and 3.
