Songfacts:
The piano notes are easy to play. Fingerings are included. Listen to the audio file above.
With these musical notes you can learn a simple form of "stride piano": the regular alternation of bass and chord.
La Mer is one of Charles Trenet's most famous pieces. Released in 1946, it has been interpreted countless times since. There are at least 400 versions. This piece has also spread throughout the English-speaking world, sometimes as the original French version, sometimes under the title Beyond The Sea. English versions include interpretations by Bobby Darin in the early 1960s and George Benson in the 1980s. It has also been featured in films such as Finding Nemo, The Dreamers (Bernardo Bertolucci), Mr. Bean's Holiday, and many others. The jazzinotes easy piano edition closely follows the original recording while remaining easy to play. Fingering suggestions are included, which can, of course, be adjusted to suit individual preferences. According to Charles Trenet (1913-2001), La Mer was composed three years before its release and was initially considered to lack the necessary "swing" to be a hit, which is why it remained shelved for a time. It is indeed noticeable that while the vocals are performed in a swing style, the orchestra plays the eighth notes evenly. This causes the character of the piece to fluctuate between American swing and European chanson or orchestral piece. This is perhaps precisely what characterizes the sea: it borders different countries and cultures. The philosophy behind the lyrics is closely linked to Albert Camus's "Mediterranean" philosophy.
