Hymn to Freedom, probably the best known composition of Oscar Peterson (1925-2007), was first recorded in 1962 on the album Night Train. The proposal came from Peterson’s producer and friend Norman Granz, who was looking for a ‘definitive early-blues feel’. Oscar Peterson tried to portray the spirituals that he heard at church as a child, trying to keep the melodic and harmonic content simple. The first recording, as well as later studio and live recordings, were all played by a piano, bass and percussion trio. It was only after the first recording that, also from a request by Norman Granz, a song text was commissioned from choral lyricist Harriette Hamilton. A vocal version can be heard e.g. here.
In the 60’s, Hymn to Freedom became the unofficial hymn of the Civil Rights Movement. This can be attributed to the song’s name, which was inspired by the Civil Rights movement, and in particular to Martin Luther King.
