Songfacts:
The Hot Sardines' interpretation of Bei mir bist du schön is very modern, fast, and dynamic. It's almost impossible to sit still while listening because the music is so incredibly danceable as a swing. Both the vocals and all the instruments are top-notch. All the instruments from the original recording are included in the arrangement. In addition, there are C parts for the clarinet and trumpet, and a keyboard part for each wind instrument, allowing for the replacement or doubling of individual or all of them. The chord symbols and lyrics are also included.
The song originally comes from a Yiddish musical titled "Bei mir bistu shein," which roughly translates to "I think you're pretty." The musical was composed by Sholom Secunda with lyrics by Jacob Jacobs. It premiered in 1932 at the Rolland Theatre in New York City. Sammy Cahn and Saul Chaplin acquired the rights and significantly rewrote the piece, notably translating the lyrics into English. The first commercially released recording was by the then-unknown vocal trio The Andrews Sisters, who recorded the song in 1937 with Vic Schoen's orchestra. Jazzinotes also offers this legendary interpretation as an Bei mir bist du shein very close to the original recording. The song has since been covered many times, including by Lionel Hampton, Ella Fitzgerald, Glenn Miller, Max Raabe, Bette Midler, Isaac & Nora, and many others. It was even performed in Nazi Germany, notably by Teddy Stauffer. Zarah Leander's interpretation, recorded in Sweden in 1938, has also become famous.
The Hot Sardines were founded as a band in 2007 by singer Elizabeth Bougerol, who was born near Paris, and New York pianist Evan Palazzo. What started as a hobby project has since grown into a huge following across all platforms. For example, their YouTube video "Bei mir bist du schoen" currently has over 17 million views!
