Songfacts:
The pop song What Kind of Fool Am I? was originally released in 1962 as a part of the Anthony Newley musical Stop the World – I Want To Get Off, which met with great success in England. It was then recorded in the States and went on to reach the top of many international charts. Up to today,
it is often covered – it has even appeared on Sesame Street and the Muppet Show. Among its most famous interpreters are Sammy Davis Jr. (who had already made it onto the charts with this song in 1962) and Shirley Bassey (following shortly after in 1963). The jazzinotes editions is a Note-for-Note transcription of pianist Peter Nero’s version – in which orchestral instruments are to be heard at 1:08 (but are not included in the edition). Peter Nero, born in 1943 in Brooklyn, was trained as a classical pianist before he began to be interested in jazz through a sort of tandem exchange. He then began to play in numerous jazz clubs. Later he recorded many albums and even won a few Grammies (for example, for Best New Artist in 1961). He also went on to conduct and compose film music (for example, Sunday in New York with Jane Fonda und Cliff Robertson).
