Short Description: The sheet music is an arrangement of the jazz classic Summertime (George Gershwin). The arrangement is based on the interpretation by Charlie Parker with Strings. The solos were taken from that version (alto saxophone) and adapted to trumpet and trombone for the orchestral version, with some adjustments. As always with jazzinotes' orchestral arrangements, the instrumentation is very flexible and adaptable. Score and parts are included.

Summertime by George Gershwin is one of the most frequently played jazz pieces and is constantly being covered. This interpretation by Charlie Parker With Strings dates back to 1949. It was originally recorded for the album Charlie Parker with Strings. The producer was the legendary Norman Granz, and it was released on the Mercury label. While the original combines a ten-piece string ensemble with a jazz rhythm section, Paul Riggenbach's arrangement is written for orchestra. Charlie Parker's solos were initially transferred to trumpets, later to trombones, and then to trumpets again at the end. While the theme and the recapitulation are largely based on the original, the extension of the middle section (bridge) is the work of Paul Riggenbach. On this page you can hear both the original and a computer-generated recording of the arrangement. To do this, click on the images with arrows.
Please note: jazzinotes also offers sheet music editions of Summertime interpretations by Tori Amos, Oscar Peterson, Keith Jarrett, and Jack Wardle.
Recommendations concerning the instrumentation:
This Arrangement tries to support you in your instrumentation. It is very flexible:
- There is also a C part for each of the transposing instruments (Bb clarinet, F horn and Bb trumpet). This instrument can be replaced or doubled by a C instrument, in particular by a synthesizer.
- The strings can be replaced or doubled by a synthesizer with strings sound. For this you find the part “Strings”.
- The percussion instruments can be combined in different ways. You find the combined part “Percussion” for this.
- The lead melody, in the original recording alto saxophone, is represented in the orchestra first by trumpet, later by trombone and in the end by trumpet again.
- The harp can be varied as desired and possibly replaced by guitars.
- The marimba can be replaced by piano or vibraphone.
